Jean-Luc MARE — Sculptural Lighting & "Haute Couture" Paper Crafts
An artistic approach designed for interior architecture
Combining design, fine craftsmanship, and material research, Jean-Luc MARE’s work is driven by a single ambition: to project signature lighting into your interior projects. Inspired by the poetry of Japanese design and the purity of organic forms, these custom-made creations play with contrasts of shade, transparency, and opacity to structure volumes and shape the atmosphere of prestigious spaces.
Material & Craftsmanship: The metamorphosis of technical paper
At the heart of this creative process lies an in-depth exploration of high-end tracing paper sourced from the Italian paper manufacturer Fedrigoni. Selected for its strength and unique sensitivity to heat and humidity, this material is crafted entirely by hand:
Hand-sculpted: Wet, folded, crumpled, pleated, and heat-shaped, each sheet receives a unique, living texture.
Lightness & Durability: The paper offers a striking visual lightness while meeting the strict demands for durability and exclusivity required by contemporary projects.
Poetic light diffusion: The intricate pleating technique creates a layering effect that diffuses a soft, warm light, evoking the finesse of haute couture garments or the delicacy of botanical structures.
Iconic pieces for your exceptional projects
Created in 2016 as the workshop’s flagship model, the Millefeuille IRIS wall sconce perfectly illustrates this research into volume and light vibration. A true wall sculpture, it comes in various dimensions and formats:
Wall sconces to structure corridors, headboards, or reception areas.
Pendants & Monumental chandeliers designed to elevate double-height lobbies and stairwells.
Floor lamps & Portable lighting bringing a sculptural presence to living areas.
BtoB Specification & Bespoke Services
Engineered for seamless integration into high-end residential, luxury hospitality, and prestigious commercial projects, all creations are made to order and can be customized to meet the specific architectural constraints of your sites.
Craftsmanship & The Human Touch:
I place manual labor and fine craftsmanship at the core of my creation ("hand-sculpted," "wet, folded, crumpled"). Each piece carries the imprint of my hand, making it unique, living, and authentic.
Material Rigor & Quality: I never compromise on the choice of materials, which is why I partner with the exceptional Italian paper mill Fedrigoni. My strength lies in the technical mastery of a demanding material—sensitive to water and heat, yet built to last.
Exclusivity & Bespoke Services: I defend a vision of customized, luxury design, far removed from mass production. Made to order, my creations adapt precisely to the architectural constraints of your projects to bring a true "signature light."
Poetry & Attention to Detail: My process is guided by an aesthetic and emotional quest ("poetry of Japanese design," "haute couture pleating," "organic forms"). I seek to sculpt light and shadow to evoke emotion and shape the atmosphere of a space.
