The model for the replica on facing brick was developed during traditional brick manufacture when the bricks in the lowest row were particularly irregular because of the pressure of the bricks on top – with all around sharp-edged overlapping clay residues. Originally considered as inferior quality they soon became one of the most favourite items of designers in Europe. Well-known from historic buildings in old areas of towns they are often a perfect match or appear sophisticated on new buildings today.
