Description

About the design
The N02™ Recycle is a multi-use chair with a shell made from upcycled household plastic waste that remains recyclable. A folded-crease detail in the backrest, inspired by a folded paper, provides targeted support for upper and lower back. Seven shell colours reference Scandinavian nature and, combined with several base options, make the N02™ Recycle suitable for workspaces, meeting rooms and dining areas. A sledge base variant creates a continuous loop each side and four-legged and sledge bases can be specified. Chairs can be linked securely in straight rows.

About the designer
Oki Sato, founder of nendo design studio, works across product, installation and architecture. Born in Toronto and trained in architecture at Waseda University in Tokyo, he established nendo in 2002. The studio is recognised for its architectural and furniture projects worldwide.

Project / Inspiration
The product has been specified at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) for its sustainability, durability and clean aesthetic. Selection criteria for the project emphasised user involvement, practical stability and matching shell colours to interior contexts.

Key considerations highlighted
  • Sustainability: shell produced from recycled household plastic waste and recyclable at end of life.
  • Durability: robust shell designed for high-traffic environments.
  • Aesthetics: seven shell colours inspired by Scandinavian nature.
  • Versatility: same shell available on multiple bases (four-legged and sledge-base options).

Practicality vs. cleaning
The specification process notes a trade-off between chairs with handling openings for easier cleaning and chairs that remain more stable in use. For the referenced project, stability and practicality were prioritised.
