Wood is the first material from which chairs were made. It remains widely used today, though lighter plastic and aluminum have become just as common. However, wood has lost none of its traditional charm due to its elegant forms, natural warmth and endless grain variety.
The Thonet Chair stands out in the history of furniture manufacture. In the mid-nineteenth century, Michel Thonet became the first to perfect a method for bending wood, enabling the creation of chairs with gently curving lines. This chair can be considered the first example of industrial furniture design ever.
