G.T.DESIGN

Who we are

A pioneer in the contemporary rug industry, G.T.DESIGN combines artisanal techniques and craftsmanship with cutting edge technology to manufacture unique and luxurious products with an unparalleled attention to detail.

For over 40 years, the Italian manufacturer has redefined textiles and the contemporary rug as an essential element of interior design. The artistic approach of Deanna Comellini, the company’s founder and creative director, adds expressive modernity to the weaving process and rug creation, as she perfectly blends nature, light and color.

G.T.DESIGN’s research into yarns evolved from sustainable fibers such as hemp and jute to hand-weaving of technological and high-performance yarns, combined with a constant drive to explore the design process, ranging from new weaving systems, to hand painting methods, and digital printing.

Some exciting industry breakthroughs are the Coconutrug, the first patented contemporary rug made with precious coconut fiber, and Kama, made in viscose and among the company’s bestselling products, still incomparable in terms of sheen and color depth.

Founded in 1977 in Bologna by Deanna Comellini, G.T.DESIGN collaborates with the finest brands in the design industry and fully supports interior designers and architects in their projects in creating custom designed spaces with a completely new perspective.

“The Contemporary Rug Manifesto”

“The original rug is the ground we were born onto. It reflects who we are. It is the first element in creating an intimate and domestic atmosphere. It carries the scent, the habits, the poetry of a home. The rug is an archaic symbol that G.T.DESIGN has transformed into something contemporary, familiar, a homely symbolism that defines the boundaries of personal space.”

Our values

An artistic approach

G.T.DESIGN’s creative approach starts from an artistic vision of the product rather than an industrial one and generates a production process with an unparalleled attention to detail distinctive of the luxury sector.

Deanna Comellini’s creative process was always focused on the interaction between matter, form and space, concentrating on the notion of the contemporary rug. Aside from the obsessive quest for the perfect color palette, and the use of top-quality natural materials and high-performance technical yarns, it was her inventive idea of revisiting the rug that marked her story as a designer.

Currently, the same free minded observation of the world drove her to undertake the exciting era of digital printing rug design which, among other things, allows the production of rugs of very large dimensions as well as wall to wall for hospitality projects.

High quality materials

Natural fibers, including linen, coconut, bamboo, pure wool, hemp, silk and natural derivatives such as tencel - lie at the heart of Deanna Comellini’s experimentation into design and processing methods. These materials are at the core of her research into the function, performance and intrinsic symbolism of the articles produced. Leaving mere industrial production behind, the crafting highlights the imperfections and the sensitive vitality of the rugs delightfully unique flaws.

Deanna also uses high performance technical yarns such as viscose to give an incomparable sheen and color depth to the Kama rug, among the company’s bestselling products and a trend setter in the industry.

Innovation + Craftsmanship

G.T.DESIGN has carried the age-old weaving process - for thousands of years an important expression of technology, identity and innovation - into the design universe. The discovery, exploration and safeguard of traditional weaving techniques from various international cultures and the use of natural fibers have always been at the core of Deanna Comellini’s creative approach.

The fusion of artisan know-how and modern design culture have always oriented G.T.DESIGN’s collections. They combine different influences, and, on occasion, distant realities, including the expertise of the finest fiber producers and cutting edge textile manufacture techniques.

Sustainability

G.T.DESIGN has a deep commitment to sustainability, driven by Deanna Comellini’s strong relationship with nature and her quest to celebrate and preserve it.

G.T.DESIGN favors the use of natural materials since the early Eighties, when there was little talk about sustainability. Natural fibers such as hemp, bamboo, coconut and linen have productive cycles with a low environmental impact that don’t require the use of large quantities of water and have low carbon emissions. In addition, G.T.DESIGN uses non-toxic dyes and packaging made with completely recyclable natural and synthetic materials.

The research into new technologies – such as high-performance yarns and digital printing – has never undermined her attention to Man and nature that lies at the heart of designer Deanna Comellini’s daily humanism. She constantly listens to the power of nature and strives to protect it.
