Map Slate was founded in Valfontanabuona, the cradle of the ancient slate tradition. Even today, this unique and distinctive material is quarried underground by skilled and experienced hands, who have inherited from that tradition passion, determination, and perseverance.

The Art of Slate Craftsmanship

Slate slabs are shaped and reduced into sheets of different thicknesses using a simple chisel, resulting in a naturally split surface that feels delicate and unreal to the touch, yet is in fact hard, waterproof, and incredibly durable.

Its versatility makes it suitable for multiple uses (flooring, roofing, cladding, tiles, and furnishing elements), in all of which it preserves the natural essence of the stone from which it originates, maintaining its beauty and solidity unaltered.

Specialized in the production of slate floors, cladding, and roofs, Map Slate enriches its catalog today, in addition to the traditional Fontanabuona slate, with a wide range of slates and stones: Black Slate (which does not fade outdoors), Green Slate, Multicolor Slate, Mare Slate, Purple Slate, Quartzite, and Sandstone.

The Slate Quarries

The slate quarries of Val Fontanabuona have traditionally represented the heart of slate production in Italy and are the true setting in which Map Slate operates every day. This unique and distinctive material is still quarried underground today by skilled and experienced hands.
