The CHURCH CHAIR was designed by the famous Danish architect and furniture designer Kaare Klint for the Grundtvig Church in Copenhagen. His equally renowned architect father, Peder Vilhelm Jensen-Klint, was responsible for the construction of the Grundtvig Church, and after P.V. Jensen-Klint's death in 1930, Kaare Klint completed the impressive building project inaugurated by his father.
Kaare Klint stands as a father figure for Danish furniture design. In 1942 he became assistant professor at the Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and started a whole new movement of furniture design. His students included names such as Børge Mogensen, Hans J. Wegner and other famous designers. He had a huge interest in the movements and measurements of the human body and used this knowledge to create furniture pieces perfectly adapted to the human anatomy.
The CHURCH CHAIR is a challenge for any skilled carpenter and requires high accuracy and patience throughout the entire manufacturing process. There are no right angles on the chair, and all four cross beams on the backrest are bended and shaped differently in order to suit the human spine the best possible way. The seat is made of hand-woven paper cordel, treated with soap and wax to make it stay resistant.
The elegant and majestic chair serves as a natural integrated part of the imposing Grundtvig Church, but is still simple and timeless enough to fit into any modern interior design. A design icon from generations ago for generations to come.
