Adhesion: It refers to the attractive force that allows for different types of molecules to adhere to each other. Cohesion: It refers to the attractive force between the same types of molecules. Cohesion force is the force that holds matter molecules together. The best example for cohesion force is that liquid drop stands in a global structure without being dispersed. Adhesion and cohesion forces are intermolecular forces. Adhesion and cohesion forces are effective in the wetting of objects. Bitumen is hydrophobic and aggregate is hydrophilic. The polarity of bitumen is low, while the polarity of water is very high as compared with bitumen. So, the ability of water to wet the aggregate surface is much higher than the ability of bitumen. Bitumen is a material with low polarity, difficult to adhere to many aggregate surfaces and has high viscosity.
