Tibre River Description:
Tibre is Portuguese for the Tiber River, the third longest river in Italy. According to legend, the city of Rome was founded in 753BC on the banks of the Tiber, where Romulus and Remus were raised by a she-wolf after being abandoned on the bank of the river. Beginning in the mountains in Emilia-Romagna , the river runs through Tuscany, Umbria, Lazio and Perugia before it drains into the sea. The main “watercourse” of ancient Rome and critical for commerce in Roman times, ships could reach as far as 100 kilometers upriver from Rome and the port at the mouth was instrumental in the import of wheat, olive oil, and wine from all over the empire.
