A skylight is a flat, pyramidal or convex roof window which illuminates a room from above. It provides more than twice the light of a vertical window of the same size, and spreads it more evenly.
Skylights are typically installed in steeply-pitched roofs when attic space is being remodeled for use as a bedroom, a study or another purpose. They also are found in areas whose layout or function requires overhead illumination.
Some skylights are fixed, while others can be opened, either manually or electrically, sometimes via a remote control. Automatic models open and close in response to rain or other factors.
Choice will depend on frame material, which includes wood, aluminum and PVC. Laminated glass and single, double and triple glazing are possible. There are manual, mechanical, automatic, hinged, pivoting, lifting and other opening systems. Skylights must be durable, watertight and offer insulation.
