An underground tank is used to store products such as fuel or water (e.g., waste, storm, potable). It may be designed for the collection of surface or rainwater, which can then be filtered for landscape irrigation or other purposes.

Certain industrial applications require the treatment and storage of large quantities of contaminated or wastewater, to be progressively released into the public sanitation system once its quality reaches an acceptable level. This reduces pollution and contributes to responsible waste management. On ArchiExpo, tanks are arranged by properties such as use (e.g., rainwater) or material (e.g., stainless steel).

Technologies

Underground tanks may be made of materials including stainless steel, fiber glass and polyethylene.

How to choose

Consider how tank contents will be filtered and treated. The tank may need to be connected to a garden water supply or even the public sewer system. Verify that capacity suits the intended use, that overflow is properly managed and that it complies with local regulations.

Determine whether the product or water entering the container requires pumping or filtration before and/or after storage. Tank and contents must be properly managed to prevent health hazards, such as the development of bacteria.
