OverviewThe cityCube is a multifunctional greening container system designed to introduce vegetation into dense urban settings. It combines facade greening with integrated seating and functional space while operating autonomously through an irrigation system, a water storage tank and photovoltaic (PV) modules. The modular concept allows configuration for different site conditions using durable, sustainably chosen materials to limit environmental impact.
System structureThe system comprises two container frames stacked vertically. Planted modules form the outer walls in rows of five as fixed planters. Two PV modules are mounted on the upper container to supply electricity for the irrigation pump. The lower container serves as a waiting area, lounge or meeting space with room for benches or charging stations. A wheelchair ramp provides accessible entry. The unit is portable and can be installed on any level, stable surface without prior civil works.
Irrigation of the systemElectricity for the irrigation pump is produced by the two PV modules on the upper container. The modules are tilted outward and partially extend beyond the container walls, assisting irrigation from ambient humidity and rainfall. Inside the containers, hoses with nozzles are laid in a serpentine pattern to provide drip irrigation directly to the plant root zone.
Advantages- Promotion of biodiversity
Planting schemes prioritize insect-friendly perennials that create habitats for bees, butterflies and other pollinators.
- Flexibility & sustainability
Modular design permits adaptation to varied urban sites; material choices focus on longevity and reduced ecological footprint.
- Improvement of the urban climate
cityCube installations contribute to better air quality, local temperature regulation and attenuation of urban noise.
Types of plantingAvailable low-maintenance planting schemes for cityCube include:
- Minimus — Euonymus fortunei ‘Minimus’: forms a mat ~15 cm high with small dark green leaves (~1 cm); evergreen and hardy with low site requirements.
- Cotoneaster — Cotoneaster dammeri ‘Radicans’: fast-growing, flat-creeping groundcover forming a carpet up to ~20 cm high with seasonal flowers and berries.
- Moss — actively captures fine dust, offers high surface area for sound absorption, retains water well and requires minimal maintenance.
- Perennials — multi-year herbaceous plants providing seasonal variation in colour and structure to support pollinators.
Product descriptionThe cityCube is a container-based facade greening product delivering a self-sufficient solution with integrated irrigation, a water storage tank and photovoltaic modules. Its modular nature enables rapid deployment and flexible configurations for urban greening projects, with plantings selected to favour insect habitats and enhance urban ecological networks.
