Description

On a weekday in October, over 900 people were traversing the Hudson on the newest New York State Park and historic pedestrian bridge. The deck of the Walkway consists of 973 precast concrete panels weighing between 24,000 and 36,000 lbs each supported 212’ above the Hudson on a steel superstructure that originally carried railroad traffic. The view from the Walkway is spectacular – in all directions. The natural beauty of the Hudson Valley mixed with the man-made beauty of the Mid-Hudson Bridge and a majestic sail boat provides something for everyone to enjoy. The Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge was open in 1888. Considered a technological marvel and being touted as the longest bridge in the world at that time, it was the main link between New England and points West. Now, once again, the bridge provides a unique link between Poughkeepsie and Highland, connecting bike and walking trails on both sides of the Hudson River.
