Overview Portland Limestone Cement is a lower-carbon alternative to traditional Portland Cement. It is widely used in ready-mixed concrete, concrete products, civil engineering and building applications. Portland Limestone Cement is available in bulk tanker delivery throughout Great Britain and carries independent third-party certification including the UKCA mark.
Applications - Architectural concrete
- Concrete block paving
- Dry silo mortar
- Engineered concrete solutions
- Roof tiles and concrete roof products
Benefits Portland Limestone Cement reduces embodied CO2 through increased limestone content while maintaining performance similar to Bulk Portland (CEM I) concrete. It has a paler colour suitable for decorative and architectural concrete and is quality assured with independent third-party certification and carries a UKCA mark.
Technical information Fresh concrete made with Portland Limestone Cement shows properties similar to Bulk Portland CEM I concrete, although setting time may be slightly shortened and tendency to bleeding significantly reduced. At equal concrete strength, performance is comparable to CEM I regarding carbonation rate, chloride ingress and resistance to freezing and thawing (for both air-entrained and non-air-entrained concrete). Cement content required for a given 28-day cube strength and slump should be determined from trial mixes; for high-strength concrete cement content may be slightly higher than for CEM I.
User guide / Usage notes Concrete, mortars and grouts containing Portland Limestone Cement must be specified and used correctly for best performance. Cement content must be correct and water:cement ratio kept as low as possible consistent with satisfactory placing, thorough compaction and effective curing. Final finish quality depends on user skill and familiarisation with the material and application methods. Portland Limestone Cement is manufactured from natural products and slight shade variations may occur between manufacturing centres. Tarmac cannot be held responsible where workmanship has not been carried out in accordance with good practice.
