HISTORY The MacDonald clan was founded when Kind Somerled was killed fighting Malcolm IV in 1164, was succeeded by his son Dougall and the clan of MacDonald through Dougall's son Ronald and his grandson Donald. One of the largest clans, the family have many branches and are mentioned throughout historic Scotland. The MacDonald's ruled the seas around scotland for almost 400 years. Somerled and his descendants were known as Lords of the Isles. It is believed that Somerled has more living descendants today than any other in history second only to Genghis Khan. The MacDonald Lord of the Isles tartan is an unusual two shades of green with white/cream. Crest: On a crest coronet, an armoured hand holding a cross.
