Description

Overview Toplight C is Tarmac's lightweight structural concrete produced using specialist engineered high-strength lightweight aggregate and tailored admixtures to provide much lower densities compared to standard conventional concrete. Toplight C can be produced with typical densities of 1800–1900 kg/m3 for structural mixes and can achieve compressive strengths up to 50 N/mm2; non-structural mixes are possible with densities as low as 1000 kg/m3. It can be pumped, placed and compacted similar to normal weight concrete.

Applications
  • Create lighter concrete slabs, foundations, floors and walls to reduce loads on structures.
  • Lightweight structural concrete for reinforced concrete slabs, enabling reduced slab thickness and reduced steel reinforcement usage.
  • Lightweight structural concrete for composite metal decking to reduce self-weight (reducing deflection and propping requirements).
  • Non-structural lightweight concrete applications where reduced self-weight is required.

Benefits
  • Reduces weight compared with conventional concrete: approximately 30% reduction for structural applications and up to 60% for non-structural applications.
  • Can reduce the need for propping on metal deck floors and shorten completion times.
  • Supports reductions in steel reinforcement and foundation size, potentially lowering overall project cost.
  • Environmentally beneficial: the lightweight aggregate used is an expanded raw material producing significantly more aggregate per cubic metre than quarried aggregates, reducing demand on natural resources.
  • Pumpable and placeable like normal weight concrete.
  • Improved fire resistance compared with normal weight concrete.
  • Improved thermal and acoustic properties and reduced cold bridging.

How it works The mix uses specialist engineered lightweight aggregate combined with tailored admixtures to deliver high strength and fluidity while maintaining reduced density. This combination allows Toplight C to be pumpable and workable in challenging site conditions while achieving high compressive strengths and improved fire performance.

Technical The lightweight aggregate used in Toplight C complies with BS EN 13055 and the product is designed in accordance with BS EN 206-1 and BS 8500. Toplight C mixes can be produced across a range of densities to meet structural and non-structural requirements and can achieve compressive strengths up to 50 N/mm2 while offering the reduced self-weight benefits typical of engineered lightweight concretes.

Case studies / Examples of use
  • 60 London Wall — lightweight structural concrete for composite metal deck floor extension.
  • Nobu Hotel, London — lightweight structural concrete for hotel rooftop extension.

Caractéristiques / spécifications techniques
  • Product name / commercial designation: Toplight C.
  • Typical structural densities: 1800–1900 kg/m3.
  • Non-structural densities: down to approx. 1000 kg/m3.
  • Compressive strength: structural mixes up to 50 N/mm2 (dependent on mix design).
  • Standards: lightweight aggregate complies with BS EN 13055; designed in accordance with BS EN 206-1 and BS 8500.
  • Workability: pumpable and placeable similar to normal weight concrete.
  • Performance: reduced self-weight (≈30% structural, ≈60% non-structural), improved fire resistance, improved thermal and acoustic properties, reduced cold bridging.
  • Environmental: uses expanded lightweight aggregate giving higher aggregate yield per m3 and reduced demand on quarried resources.
