Description

All three of these impressive Federal Aviation Administration air traffic control towers were constructed of post-tensioned, precast concrete modules. The use of the same size module on each project contributed significantly to the cost effectiveness of the precast solution. The Albany International Airport tower (90 ft high) consisted of 44 modules. In Syracuse, NY, the Hancock International Airport tower (120 ft high) utilized 60 modules. The modules were 12 ft 6 in. deep x 10 ft wide x 7 ft 5 in. high with a curved surface on one face. The units weighed approximately 24 tons each. In both the Hancock Airport and Albany International Airport, precast panels were utilized for the adjacent TRACON buildings. The 150 ft high air traffic control tower serving the Bradley International Airport consists of 76 modules. The units were cast utilizing white cement, galvanized reinforcement and local aggregates.
