ApplicationsIn homes, spot lighting is used for the presentation of decorative objects. It also may be used to illuminate outdoor spaces such as paths. Multiple units can be combined for even area lighting. Commercial applications include product display, facilitating manual tasks or to create an ambiance, as in theatrical or facade lighting.
TechnologiesInstallation varies. Stage lighting may be hung vertically, or horizontally from trusses or be freestanding. In many residential and commercial settings, spotlights are recessed into the ceiling or hung from tracks. The size and power of the bulb can be varied according to function. Halogen and some other bulbs produce a very bright light, but their high operating temperature may constitute health or safety risks.
How to chooseEnsure that the light source is appropriate for the intended use. Consider brightness needs and whether weatherproofing or other special properties are required. Verify compliance with relevant regulations. At home, a low powered LED or fluorescent bulb may be adequate.
Stage lighting may need to powerful enough to illuminate an area tens of meters away. The bulbs often become dangerously hot and fragile, and must be handled carefully, respecting the applicable standards and regulations.
