This elegant hotel is named after the town of Punta Negra, near Alghero, where the hotel is located. The name Punta Negra comes from the special color of the rocks in the bay. In this area, in fact, there are karstic cavities where freshwater flows in at less than 5° C, mixing up with the sea’s salt water and allowing the formation of special algae that make the rocks black. For a couple of years, Mr. Francesco Masia, the hotel manager, had been trying to have a permanent outdoor structure in front of the sea but the hotel position in a protected area made it impossible because the state didn’t authorize the construction of new buildings. Therefore, the architect who oversees hotel projects proposed that the manager installed a bioclimatic pergola as an alternative. The pergola has a moveable roof and, therefore, it couldn’t be considered a permanent construction, but it could protect from the sun and the rain and provide the outdoor space that the hotel manager had always wanted. Now the hotel manager says that the result is beyond his expectations: this new section of the hotel can be used for a long period, about seven months, and that is possible thanks to the installation of the pergolas that have improved the available outdoor space of the hotel. In fact, they have also been able to organize outdoor events, such as wedding parties, which has become a more and more successful business.
