Description

The refurbishment of Manchester Piccadilly Station retained the original listed train shed building, which was erected in 1842, while introducing an entirely new concourse and entrance to improve circulation and dramatically update the image of the station. Modern engineering techniques were employed to support the new mono-pitch roof. Texlon® ETFE transparent inflated panels were used throughout the project to maximise the natural light provision to the passenger areas. The concourse was also used as a gateway for the Commonwealth Games in 2002 and subsequently featured as a backdrop to TV news footage during the games. The winner of several major Transport Interchange awards, a RIBA award and a Roses Design award has transformed this urban hub into a structure worthy of the 21st century.
