Ocean Park is Hong Kong’s unique home grown, adventure themed, resort that opened in 1977. Hong Kong’s government approved a HK$10.64 billion plan to expand and reimagine Ocean Park with seven themed zones and 20 attractions. This included a new Water Park and Vector Foiltec is proud to be part of the redevelopment team delivering two large roofs for the new Water World buildings with 3,000 m2 of our Texlon® ETFE system.
Achievement: Steel Savings
Our scope of work included the design, fabrication, supply, and installation of the three layer ETFE cushion system. This included 40 integrated smoke vents all cladded with our ETFE. In addition, we were responsible for design and engineering of the steel structure supporting the ETFE and the two ETFE skylights. This also required submissions and approvals to Hong Kong Building Department for both steel and ETFE.
Vector Foiltec is a leader when it comes to lightweight architectural steelwork engineering. We elected to use built-up steel beams with varying radii. Therefore, it allowed us to taper the beam at the center span where force are lower. As a result, we achieved elegant, open, shell-like geometry with single layer steel structure and no trusses. Moreover, the efficiency of the steel structure offered substantial weight, cost, and time savings for the project team.
Vector Foiltec is a leader when it comes to lightweight architectural steelwork engineering. This results in two unique shell-like geometry roofs. There was no need for trusses because of the built-up beams.
