The K Mall in Cambodia is the first ETFE project in the country. The development of Urbanland, one of the largest developers in the country, is situated in a new emerging area of Phnom Penh. K Mall hosts supermarkets, fashion stores, and a cinema. A Texlon® ETFE canopy with a span of 30 meters with a slight twist covers the entrance. Vector Foiltec designed, fabricated, supplied, and installed the 500 m² Texlon® ETFE canopy. A two-layer ETFE installation with 7 ETFE cushions forms this protective canopy. The whole Texlon® ETFE system for K Mall has a unique design, perfectly fitting to the wished design of the customer. We worked closely with the architect HKA & Partners. Further, with our developed print technology, we provided a silver print on the bottom side of the upper ETFE layer. This effects high thermal performance, with high light transmission and anti-glare properties for the entrance under the canopy. If you move your eyes from the cushions to the steel work, you will find a slender canopy structure. Part of our scope included the design of that steel structure supporting our Texlon® ETFE cushions. Tapered arch beams, each having multiple radii, are build-up sections fashioned from steel plates. Such designs are value-engineering at its best – highly efficient and as such, further savings for our client. Texlon® ETFE is well known for its lightweight characteristics and cost reducing impact on buildings. Furthermore, the light weight of the system aids in lowering the projects’ overall carbon footprint, also when it comes to material transport.
